Included in the Michigan State Capitol Battle flag collection are fifty-six flags associated with Michigan units that participated in the Great War. During World War I, the flags of the military units were normally not used as the focal point or rallying point for troops in combat but were used to mark the location of the headquarters for the Regiment or the Division. As a result of this, the flags are in incredible condition and constitute a very important part of the Capitol Battle flag collection. The Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs has a concise and informative description of the important role Michigan played in World War I.
