Building Hours

The Michigan Capitol is open to visitors year-round, Monday through Friday. The Capitol is closed on Michigan’s state holidays except for election day. Find a list of state holidays at https://www.michigan.gov/som/government/state-holidays.

Tour Times

Guided tours are available between 9:00 and 4:00. Groups of 10 or more people can schedule a tour in advance, smaller groups and individuals are permitted to join with scheduled groups. Please call (517) 373-2353 to confirm tour times or schedule a tour.

Tour Options

Guided tours start in our visitors center, Heritage Hall, at 323 Ottawa St. Lansing, Michigan. Guided tours are free of charge, and last about an hour.

Self-guided tour books and building maps are available online and at the information desks in Heritage Hall and in the Capitol. These books are also available in Español (Spanish), Français (French), Deutsch (German), Pусский (Russian), 日本語 (Japanese), 中文 (Chinese/Mandarin), and العربية (Arabic).

Smartphone Tours

The Capitol tour service now offers smartphone tours! These quick, self-guided tours focus on speciality Capitol topics - such as historic furniture, portraits, and art - that can be found throughout the Capitol and its grounds. Click here or scan the QR code to take a tour.

Parking

Street parking is available on the streets surrounding the Capitol, with the closest parking near the entrances on Capitol Avenue and Ottawa Street.

Pay at electronic pay stations with a card, coins, or through the Passport Parking App. You will need your license plate number and parking zone number.

Security

No weapons are permitted within the Capitol building. All individuals entering the Capitol building are subject to the policies and procedures of the Michigan State Capitol Commission.

All individuals, objects, and/or personal effects entering the Capitol building are subject to inspection, screening, and/or search.

Accessibility Resources

The goal of the Michigan State Capitol Commission and Capitol staff is to ensure that every person visiting the Michigan State Capitol is treated with respect. Everyone should be able to enjoy a tour, observe the legislature, and participate in the legislative process.

The Michigan Legislature, in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ensures that individuals with disabilities shall not be excluded from participating in, or be denied, the benefits of any program, service, or activity offered by the Legislature

The purpose of this section is to advise persons with disabilities of the services and accommodations available at the Michigan State Capitol.

Capitol tours are entirely elevator accessible, and visitors may borrow a wheelchair while they are here.

Family bathrooms are located in Heritage Hall. A family bathroom and adult changing station is located in the west hall of the ground floor.

A Braille version of our self-guided book is available upon request and American Sign Language interpreters can be scheduled in advance for groups of 10 or more.

Sensory friendly kits, colorblind glasses, and hands-on 3D models of the Capitol are available for use at the Heritage Hall information desk.
