Michigan Museums Association Conference

Save the Flags hosted attendees of the 2025 Michigan Museums Association Conference that was held in Lansing the week of October 13, 2025. Conservation specialists May Oyler and Cambray Baylis demonstrated the process of net removal and the techniques they are using to conserve and stabilize the battle flags. The 3-hour program included a visit to the Capitol Heritage Hall conservation lab and the archival storage facility at the Michigan Historical Center.

The 10th Infantry Flag Gets a Visit

Friends and family of David Norris visited the flag collection on October 15, 2025. Standing before the flag of the 10th Michigan Infantry Regiment are Eddie, Issa, Lori and David. The Norris’ are descendants of Talmon C. Owen who fought with the 10th Michigan Infantry.

We’d like to thank the Norris’ for their continued support of Save the Flags!

Battle Flag Staffs Photo & Cataloging Project

The Save the Flags and Capitol Collections teams are hard at work on a collaborative effort to catalog, photograph, and make publicly accessible the collection of Michigan Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I battle flag staffs. This collection of 200+ wood staffs, which accompany the flags in storage at the Michigan History Museum, each feature unique finials, brass plaques, and metal collars. Once the project is complete, the staffs will be viewable alongside their respective flags at MSCBattleFlags.org.
