The Michigan State Capitol - A Memorial to the Civil War
The State Capitol was built in part in 1879 to serve as a memorial to the service and sacrifice offered by the over 90,000 Michiganders who fought in the recently ended Civil War. The battle flags, the state armory and military museum, the monuments on the grounds and the numerous state employees, Governors and legislators who were veterans of the war and worked in the Capitol served as a constant reminder of that sacrifice. This presentation will share these stories.
